CHRIS' OSCAR PICKS
I recommend using my picks as a barometer for what NOT to pick if you’ve got an office pool going, only because I’m historically the WORST Oscar picker around. Nevertheless, here are my predictions:
BEST ACTOR – Jeff Bridges (“Crazy Heart”) this seems to be the only one we all agree on
BEST ACTRESS – Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”) mostly because this is the first (and, let’s face it, maybe the last) time she’ll be considered
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR – Chrisoph Waltz (“Inglorious Basterds”) he very nearly carried what could otherwise have been a very disposable film
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS – Mo’Nique (“Precious”) because everyone thinks so
BEST DIRECTOR – James Cameron (“Avatar”) yeah, he’s got a snowball’s chance in hell, but he’s the only “event movie” director I can think of who actually knows how to tell a story
BEST SCREENPLAY (ORIGINAL) – “The Hurt Locker” because they need to give it something and I don’t think it will win Picture or Director
BEST SCREENPLAY (ADAPTED) – “Up in the Air,” although I’d like to see “Precious” get it, actually
BEST ORIGINAL SONG – “The Weary Kind” seems like a shoo-in – as they said in the film, sometimes a song just sounds like you’ve heard it before, which makes it an instant classic – go Ryan Bingham!
BEST PICTURE – “The Blind Side” will win because of the “Avatar/Hurt Locker” vote split – also sci-fi has never won Best Picture, and I think “Hurt Locker” is too obscure
Well, come Monday I’ll see how pitiful my picks were this year (^_^)
